Your one stop shop for US Airways Flight 1549
All the on-and-off coverage you've seen only gave you bits and pieces of the story. Yes, the landing is crazy, but why? Dude was essentially flying a billion pound glider into the Hudson River. No engines worked, so he couldn't really steer, accelerate, or decelerate. To put it into perspective, it's like you trying to parallel park a car. With the engine off. Transmission in neutral, rolling down a hill. And the other cars on the street each represented 200,000 lives. And you've never were trained to park a car before.
If you were off by a few degrees on the landing, the wings would have caught the water, things would have started coming apart like in Lost. Air Force One. Top Gun. You name it.
The BBC comes through with a great tutorial on what happened.
