There is a great debate going on about the 2008 Olympics, and it's not on whether I have the hottest bod north of 19th Avenue, but about Oscar Pistorius and his green light to try and qualify for the 400m this summer.
Check it out- he's an amputee that is missing two legs (and nothing else, he assures). Remember the beauty of the Olympics: it's open. Anyone is given a chance to compete, even a Chuck from The Home Depot. This is discrimination against the handicap. Just because he has a prosthetic doesn't mean he can't compete against the world's bests.
Fuck that. In place, the prosthetics he is using are springs. Yes, springs. Springs that actually look like two messed up spatulas. These things weigh in at ounces each, taking away as much as 40lbs of body weight. This guy is not the guy who needs help onto a Muni, OK? This guy can take your wallet and run away backwards faster than you can forward. In a study, these springs reduce up to 75% of the energy needed to run equivalent speeds (though it may have been conducted by the two-legged people he'd beaten).
What I'm trying to say here is there is a fine line between the competing athletes that have artificial parts and limbs and the "pure breeds". The Olympic and major sports committees have a lot of decisions to make. Where is the decision going to be made between letting Oscar Pistorius run and letting Terrell Owens play- just because he has a metal screw in his ankle (or that he sleeps in water/electric coffin). Both of them have man-made technology in their bodies that help them live life, let alone compete. Man, I wish I was a better writer. This would have sounded a lot better.
